A Healthy Life Starts with a Healthy Home

1/2/2016
In previous articles we’ve discussed how the interiors of offices can be made more hospitable and healthy with the installation of plants, better lighting, scrubbed air and so on. But little thought is given to our own homes.
In recent years there has been a boom in “wellness environments” in hotels and spas helping people escape their usual environs which make them ill. These buildings filter the air, purify the water, use the best flicker free lighting, have soft pastel wall colorings, spa baths and so on. The company behind many of these centers is Delos, which, in partnership with Columbia University Medical Center, has spent four years reviewing 4,000 scientific studies relating to health and the environment. The results of this finding have now been compiled into a database which allows builders determine what they need to design the healthiest homes and meet the WELL Building standard.
The WELL Building standard looks at such things as how spaces contribute to a person’s wellness. With over 100 required attributes to meet the silver and gold standards and looks at the quality of the Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Fitness, Comfort and Mind of a building. For each of the seven sections there are several attributes which need to be met. For example in the Light section it looks at things such as the reflexivity of a surface and the circadian lighting design to help maintain our natural rhythms.
Whilst some sections, such as air quality, which have so many outside interferences, may be difficult to measure and improve the overall mission to improve living standards and make us all a bit healthier is a worthy one. If you’re interested in reading the full report to get ideas of how to improve the quality of your own home you can download it from here and make some small changes that may make all the difference to your life.
