Choosing The Right Drive For The Job — 24/7 Enterprise HDDs vs. General HDDs

2/8/2017

From time to time, Advantech PAPS encounter RMA issues caused by HDD errors. Some of the problems are caused by using the wrong type of HDD. System integrators are always trying to balance data and system reliability with price. So it is essential to balance the HDD type, storage capacity, and number of hard drives in a system, with the requirements of performance, data integrity and availability. This paper provides an explanation of the differences between enterprise level HDDs and desktop level HDDs to providecustomers with all the information they need to choose the right HDD.

Below are key questions to ask to select the right HDD for your system.
Q. Are your systems exposed to shock and vibration?
Q. Do you want to do more with your NAS such as, virtualization, collaboration, remote access, or multi-media?
Q. Do you need a storage system that can run 24×7?
Q. Are you using drives in a RAID environment?

Among the above features, the most import is the vibration sensor called RV sensor. All enterprise HDD are equipped with a vibration sensor circuit on the drive’s electronic board. These sensors is designed to detect the movement of HDDs when the servo is moving the heads, which provides a reliable method of positioning the heads and determining when it is safe to read or write data.

Conclusion
As hard drives technology changes, customers have a choice of products to use in their enterprise or desktop environment. It is important to properly balance system requirements with hard drive features and choose a hard drive to meet application requirements such as storage capacity, reliability, 24x7 usage, and shock & vibration. Functionality can be optimized by choosing drives that meet the design specifications demanded by their target implementation. We list all the products below that are suitable as enterprise level HDD, and we do recommend customer’s use enterprise level HDD to maximize system performance.
