Renewable Energy


Renewable energy refers to using energy generated from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat. According to a recent report from the American Wind Energy Association, the nation's wind power grew 39% in 2009, and that it has grown by 39% annually for the past five years. This consistent trend can also be seen amongst other renewable energies, such as solar power, where industrial corporations and government-funded projects in India and China are gaining momentum.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) released a comprehensive solar energy report in 2008 (see below) which outlines the estimated growth of photovoltaic systems, reaching over 22K MW by 2013 with expected annual revenue of more than $55 billion. This represents an average growth of 59% in the sector each year (Pike Research 2009), and global CAGRaverage 36.5% from 2006 – 2010 (DOE 2008).

Moreover, according to a wind power report released by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) in 2008 (see below), new installations in US will reach 62.7% growth (8,545 MW), and a cumulative capacity of 50.8% growth (25,369 MW) by 2030. In China, there will be 89% growth (6,246 MW), with a cumulative capacity of 106% growth (12,153 MW) in the same period. 


Most wind and solar power generation systems are installed in harsh environments with dust, vibration, heat and electrical noise. These sites require reliable data servers with fanless, cableless and diskless design and industrial-grade Ethernet products for connection with the central room for system management. In addition, HMI/SCADA software is needed to provide energy analysis, cost profiles and demand control to allow users to take action for energy management.
