Jan. 2023, Taipei, Taiwan — Advantech, a global leader in embedded computing, is pleased to introduce MIO-5377, a 3.5” SBC powered by the latest 12th and 13th Gen. Intel® Core™ processor. This new and innovative SBC leverages Intel’s latest heterogeneous computing design and boasts up to 14 cores/20 threads with a TDP of 28 watts. The superior processor performance, AI readiness, and power efficiency provided by this design enable the MIO-5377 3.5” SBC to empower myriad applications in the fields of AMR/robotics.

P/E Hybrid Architecture Design Balances Edge Performance and Efficiency

The latest 12th and 13th Gen. Intel® Core™ processors (codename: Alder Lake-P and Raptor Lake-P) are famous for being Intel’s first foray into integrating Performance-core (Goldencove; P-core) and Efficiency-core (Gracemont; E-core) architectures. P-cores are designed to optimize single-thread performances in compute-intensive workloads (for example, Core-i processors). Conversely, E-cores are added to handle lower-priority background tasks. This new architecture, which leverages the advantages of both, enables MIO-5377 to achieve a 20% increase in performance while reducing power consumption by 30% when compared to 11th Gen platforms. As a result, MIO-5377 enables the use of flatter thermal solutions — such as the QFCS or fanless solutions — to accommodate the limited size of AMRs better.

State-of-the-art Technologies Support Data Transmission Enhancement

The Advantech MIO-5377 is the first 3.5” board to support DDR5 4800MHz up to 64GB and feature 5G/Wi-Fi 6 readiness. These features lower data transmission latency to empower machine vision and connectivity in robotic applications. In addition, the MIO-5377 is also the first SBC with 1 x USB 4 port to engender expansion flexibility. The up-to-40Gbps bandwidth is capable of connecting the GPU, VPU, and high-resolution 4K cameras. This USB 4 port is capable of supporting the use of MIO-5377 as an AI accelerator or in machine vision applications through the use of PCIe tunneling.

MIO-5377 supports common real-time robotic camera interfaces through the provision of a 6 x USB 3.2 ports (including 1 x USB 4), 1 x GbE, and 1 x 2.5GbE. Likewise, the board supports 4 x UARTs, 2 x CANbus, and 3 x I2Cs aimed at robotic sensors and servomotors. In sum, MIO-5377 provides three attributes essential in the development of AI robots — these being a strong core, a power-efficient compact design, and low latency data transmission and connectivity.

Ruggedized for Outdoor and Industrial Environments

The Advantech MIO-5377 supports advanced embedded features. Indeed, it features 12 ~ 24V wide range DC-input and extended operating temperatures (-40 ~ 85 °C) for critical condition operation. Likewise, it adheres to the highest IPC standards (IPC-A-610 Class 3). When combined with a robust external coating, these elements meet the demands of applications in extremely rugged industrial/ outdoor environments.

Certified Ubuntu for faster and safer robotic deployment

As ROS2 (Robot Operating System) is widely deployed in robotic applications, MIO-5377 supports not only Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC and also Ubuntu 22.04 OS.  HW, BIOS, and OS compatibility tests are conducted by Advantech to help users save money and time by starting the building of their SW directly. Furthermore, Ubuntu OS contains various AI software development kits (SDK) and a comprehensive software development ecosystem. Users can utilize this to directly train their AI models. The Ubuntu license also indicates that Canonical is responsible for its security updates, regular re-verification on certified machines, and 10-year Long-Term Support (LTS) program.
