The Trend of Intelligent Public Transportation

Enhance Driving Safety and Information Sharing; Provide Wonderful Traveling Experience

Transportation condition plays a significant role in urban development. To improve convenience in public transport, many advanced cities have invested in intelligent public transportation systems to reduce traffic congestion caused by tremendous commuting flows. In recent years, cab CCTV surveillance system (CCTV) has gradually popularized and evolved into standard equipment of public transportation. Multiple services have also been added to the system. From securing passengers’ safety, monitoring luggage racks, managing traffic lights to improving efficiency of regional traffic control, no management can be completed without video surveillance.

Upgrade Soft Hardware to Achieve High-quality Video Surveillance without Placing Weighty Machine on the Train 

To maximize the effectiveness of video surveillance systems in the future (for instance, applying face recognition technology, creating e-ticketing systems…, etc.), the demand for image resolution has continually rose. In addition, passenger information, entertainment, ticketing and many other systems have networked for improving commuters’ convenience and supervisors’ management efficiency. To reduce power consumption, light-weighting vehicles has become constructors’ crucial objective; and PoE technology, which reduces weight of power cables, can exactly achieve the goal.

In the technology trend mentioned above, the requirement of Internet bandwidth has been increasing unstoppably, not to mention high-speed Ethernet used for building vehicular networks.


The New T5 Light Rail was Opened in Turkey Istanbul, Solving Traffic Jams

Since 2012, Dutch GPS mapping company TomTom has published The World’s Most Traffic-Choked Cities ranking report annually. Turkey’s economic center Istanbul, which has over fifteen million population, is on the list every year. To solve one of the most well-known and serious traffic problems, the Governor of Istanbul has positively promoted public transportation construction projects in recent years. One of those is to operate extra trains on the T5 Light rail route.

Shared Right-of-way Design, Safety Protection of Passengers and Vehicles Matters the Most 

The 10km long T5 route starts at Alibeyköy, moves along the Golden Horn area for 35 minutes and ends at Eminonu, the heart of Byzantine Empire in the ancient time. There are 30 five-carriage trains running on T5 route, which are said to carry over one hundred and ten thousand passengers every day. The features of short transportation route and carriages of small capacity lead to high frequency of passengers boarding and alighting. Moreover, designed to be shared right-of-way, T5 is extremely close to general roads. Due to these factors, securing the safety of both passengers and vehicles is significantly important.

Real-time and High-quality Video Surveillance

High-quality video surveillance systems with stable signal are essential for managers to supervise real-time situation inside or outside the carriages. Through continuous video monitoring, there is no need to hire large numbers of inspectors. Additionally, the systems enable users to detect unusual condition in the carriages or on the roads. By installing real-time and high-quality video surveillance systems, managers can improve management efficiency and save human resources.

In addition to implementing CCTV video surveillance system, Istanbul light rail official also required to set up Passenger Information System (abbreviation as PIS) in order to update the latest information of live train running status. Each camera installed in the first carriage was asked to be assigned an independent UID.

Enable Systems to Run Simultaneously Without Interrupting Each Other

To meet requirements mentioned above, video surveillance and passenger information systems were requested to run simultaneously in one Internet backbone without interrupting each other and offer stable PoE power supply.

How to Maximize Space Utilization in Small Light Rail Carriages

The most difficult challenges in the case were creating strong and stable Internet environment in the narrow light rail carriages, ensuring all the equipment comply with strict EN50155 standard (European Train Control System), providing suitable Internet and offering PoE power supply backup plan.

Traffic congestion problems in Istanbul has been a long-term headache for the city government. Construction and testing schedule of T5 were therefore arranged intensively. The route was organized to be officially opened in 2020, summer. To satisfy delivery demand in extremely short shipping period, Advantech integrated enriched industry experience and global resources to offer customers fastest and most considerate service. Advantech’s engineers on site in Turkey cooperated with related departments in the city government and understood their demands on managing passengers and traffic. A thorough resolution package was therefore recommended.

Moreover, the switch offers 8 Fast Ethernet M12 D-code ports with 8 IEEE 802.3at/af PoE ports. Industrial Unmanaged Ethernet Switches

EKI-6528TPI is EN50155 certified industrial switch with IP40 protection and wide temperature support designed for railway applications. EKI-6528TPI provides 4 x PoE ports that support IEEE 802.3af and can provide up to 15.4 watts of power per port. M12 connectors ensure highly reliable connectivity for industrial communication applications. 

With IP40 compact metal housings, the switch is protected against dusty environments and are a good fit for many industrial applications. Under no-power condition, 'Auto Bypass' function ensures the Ethernet signal connection through internal circuitry.
