Advantech Unveils AFE-E350: Simplifying EVSE & SECC Design

9.08.2024

Taipei, Taiwan, August 9, 2024 - Advantech (TWSE: 2395), a global leader in AIoT and Edge Computing, is thrilled to announce the launch of the AFE-E350. It is a comprehensive solution that integrates electric vehicle supply equpment (EVSE) and a supply equipment communication controller (SECC) onto a single board. This simplifies EVSE system integration and delivers end-to-end advantages. The AFE-E350 supports CAN-FD and can be expanded to include power-line-communication (PLC). It is compliant with charging control interfaces including CCS, NACS, CHAdeMO, and GB/T, enabling seamless integration with EV chargers.

Simplify Your EVSE & SECC Design with an Integrated Controller

An EVSE is a composite system where the computing unit serves as both the HMI and central controller. It includes a controller, HMI system, payment and billing, power meter, AC/AC or AC/DC power delivery, and additional parking lockers or camera systems. Designing such a system often requires additional LAN switches, I/O expanders, and protocol converters, making it challenging to manufacture and maintain.

The Advantech EV charger platform simplifies system design by integrating essential components onto a single board. It features connectivity options including 3 Ethernet ports, 2 CAN bus ports, 4 RS-232/422/485 ports, 6 USB ports, and optional PoE for IP cameras. Additionally, there are 3 M.2 sockets for various wireless connections and storage options. With a daughter board expansion, the AFE-E350 supports HomePlug Green PHY (HPGP) and HomePlug AV (HPAV) complying with ISO 15118 standards for high-level communication at the physical and data link layers. This facilitates interoperability and plug-and-charge capabilities.

Advantech addresses EVSE security challenges by adhering to ISA/IEC 62443 standards. The solutions include:

  • Firmware-level protection: TPM, secure/trusted boot, and boot guard.
  • Application-level security: Secure OS, application access control, and syst backup/recovery.
  • Cloud layer security: Network detection and response.

Additionally, Advantech’s public key infrastructure (PKI) solution meets ISO 15118-20 and OCPP 2.1 requirements for encrypted communication and identity authentication.

EdgeBMC – Out-of-Band Technology Provides Secure Remote Connectivity for Reliable Always-On Service

A recent study revealed that 25% of public EV chargers were unusable due to broken connectors and other system problems. This has led to “charge anxiety,” a significant barrier to EV ownership, as drivers face uncertainty and negative experiences when accessing or using charging points. Advantech is unveiling its new EdgeBMC solution, which introduces out-of-band (OOB) remote manageability for monitoring and controlling devices at the hardware level. Through OOB management, EdgeBMC establishes a separate parallel management infrastructure, enabling administrators to remotely manage devices even if the operating system or BIOS fails. This enhances charger availability and reduces Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) by 80%, thereby mitigating "charge anxiety" and ensuring more reliable charging.

Paving the Way for the Next 10-years: AI-Powered EV Charging

Advantech's AFE-E350 represents a significant advancement over current EV charging solutions and sets the stage for the next decade of innovation in EV charging. Its integration of smart digital displays and AI capabilities creates new opportunities for revenue generation at charging stations, including targeted advertising and enhanced customer services. The AFE-E350 features multiple high-quality displays with PoE & internal USB 3 interfaces for easy camera integration. It integrates built-in scalable computing, multi-stream hardware media transcoding, graphics rendering, and an AI framework. This powerful combination unlocks huge potential for implementing innovative services and benefits the entire value chain.
