Upgrading City Buses with Smart Ticketing and Fleet Management Systems



A rapid change in intelligent transportation has occurred worldwide. The whole industry is hungry for technological advancement. Many companies are being held back by limitations in infrastructure such as on-board payment systems and surveillance systems. Our client is one of the most important bus companies in South America, running first-class and executive-class buses, with an estimated six thousand buses, serving 150 million people annually. They were looking for a total solution for their expansion plans for thousands of buses, not just on-board ticketing solutions, but also an intelligent fleet management system to provide better services to their customers, and to ensure safe and efficient operations. 

Application Requirements 

To expand their migration plan, our customer required a reliable system with product and component longevity support. The environmental regulations for in-vehicle applications are strict, so the systems should be designed with anti-vibration and anti-shock features, and also support wide temperature operation. In addition, in order to support ticketing systems and fleet tracking for vehicles and assets on the move, wireless communications such as 3G/LTE and GPS would be necessary. Also, real-time information such as vehicle locations, which allow the control center to know where their vehicles currently are, and which routes are being taken, was also a crucial factor. Vehicle information such as fuel levels, engine temperatures, voltages, and speed data, all needed to be monitored to keep the control center informed of the health of all their vehicles so they would be able to respond to situations that fall outside of set criteria. Lastly, a demand for a fast, local 24/7 response service was requested by the customer.


Advantech, a leader in the global industrial computing market, provided the ARK-2250V fanless embedded in-vehicle computer to our customer. ARK-2250V delivers the latest Intel processor computing capability and incorporates designs unique for an in-vehicle environment. It offers ignition power management, 9 ~ 36Vdc wide power input with isolation, EMARK, and IEC 60721 5M3 shock/vibration proof certification. It also supports up to 4 IP ports for on-board cameras. Additionally, ARK-2250V supports wireless communication for fleet tracking, supports GPS, G-sensor, Wi-Fi, and 3G/LTE connectivity, making it a highly capable solution for this type of in-vehicle application.

Apart from hardware specifications, all Advantech fanless embedded computers are integrated with IoT software applications such as WISE-PaaS/RMM for remote monitoring and management, and WISE-PaaS/Security for centralized security management, which protects the system against cyber hacks and safeguards system settings and data integrity if unexpected system failures occur. Customers can also choose to use Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services as their cloud service platform and Advantech software products support these services.
