Revolutionizing Modern Communication System in Intelligent Buses
4/14/2025
Background
Many intelligent bus operators face similar challenges in maintaining reliable communication between the various systems both inside and outside their vehicles. This communication is critical for integrated data exchange, passenger safety, and operational efficiency. To overcome these issues, one operator sought a solution that complied with the modern in-vehicle standard—Information Technology for Public Transport (ITxPT). Adopting this standard was a key step toward a smarter, more connected transport system.
System Requirements
The communication network within the buses was struggling to maintain a stable connection among essential systems such as GPS, infotainment, passenger Wi-Fi, and onboard surveillance cameras. As the buses moved through different regions—from bustling urban streets to remote suburban areas—the quality of service became inconsistent, causing frustration among both passengers and operators. A more reliable communication solution was needed to ensure uninterrupted data exchange and a seamless passenger experience.
Additionally, the operators required a method to keep critical systems running even after the bus engine was turned off. This was particularly important for surveillance systems, which needed to continue recording the surroundings for a defined period to enhance security. Without this functionality, there was a risk of missing crucial footage during critical moments.
To further enhance operational efficiency, the new system needed to support a standardized communication protocol that would allow seamless integration not only among the various onboard systems but also across different vendors. Interoperability is key to creating a scalable and flexible transportation network.
Lastly, safety remained a top priority. The operators needed assurance that the communication systems met stringent safety regulations, including compliance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and fireproof standards. Certification was necessary to ensure that the installed equipment would not interfere with other onboard systems or pose a fire hazard in the event of an emergency.

System Description
To meet these demanding requirements, the intelligent bus operator adopted the ITxPT standard, an open framework designed to enable seamless integration and interoperability of IT systems in public transport. By defining standardized communication protocols and data formats, ITxPT ensured that different systems from multiple vendors could work together without compatibility issues.
The EKI-9508/9510-ST series M12 Ethernet switches were selected as the ideal solution for this intelligent bus application. These switches provided a range of features tailored to enhance communication reliability and operational efficiency:
- M12 Connectors and IP67 Protection: Designed to withstand harsh environments, these switches ensured stable operation even in conditions with vibration, dust, and moisture.
- ITxPT Certification: Full compliance with ITxPT standards guaranteed seamless integration with various onboard systems and across different manufacturers.
- Ignition Power Support: A critical feature of these switches was the ability to keep the system powered for up to 60 minutes after the bus engine was turned off. This ensured uninterrupted operation of surveillance and communication systems, addressing the security concerns of operators.
- Module Inventory Service: Supporting ITxPT’s Module Inventory Service, these switches simplified the management and integration of different components, making installation and operation more efficient.
- E-Mark R118 Certification: This fireproof certification guaranteed that the switches met stringent safety requirements, enhancing passenger and vehicle safety.
- E-Mark R10 Certification: Compliance with in-vehicle electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards prevented interference with other electronic systems onboard, ensuring system stability.
