"I'm going to work at Advantech one day," Shamo details journey to Advantech in MyStory series

2022-08-17

Even when she was younger, Cheryle Shamo always had a passion for numbers. As Shamo entered her high school years her skills continued to excel, prompting her physics teacher to encourage her to pursue a career an engineering – foreshadowing advice which she inevitably heeded.

Prior to entering the professional workforce, she’d graduate from Lawrence Technological University, in Southfield, Mich. with her Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

Shamo spent years as a channel partner for Advantech, making her immensely familiar with the notoriety and culture at Advantech, a global leader in IoT intelligent systems, computing and more.

Albeit extensive jokes on Shamo’s behalf about making the leap from being a channel partner to a member of the company – Shamo’s long running joke would soon come to fruition, as she joined the company in January of 2020.

After picking up her bags from her home state of Michigan, she relocated nearly 2,500 miles to Advantech’s Milpitas, Calif. office branch as a Senior Application Engineer supporting the industrial PC product lines and the computers and tablets that are sold in the retail and transportation industries.

As to be expected, a transition of that caliber comes with its challenges, but Shamo quickly acclimated herself within the family culture of Advantech.

“When I first came here, I didn't know very many people. I really enjoyed how Advantech really brought coworkers together and organized events, and it was just nice to get to know people that way,” Shamo said. “Once a month there's a company luncheon and we all get together and share a meal and it's really nice; a nice way to get to know your coworkers and meet other people in different departments. Those company lunches are really important to me.”

Furthermore, Shamo continued her active lifestyle in the mountainous terrain of California. But instead of the usual running – as she would previously run the Detroit Marathon back home – she invested in a mountain bike to make the most of the picture perfect trails along the California coast. Her personal favorite is one located at Laguna Beach, nicknamed, “The Top of the World”, due to its high elevation.
