Enhancing Rotating Machinery Health with Precise Vibration Monitoring and PHM Analytics

Introduction

Pumps and fans are critical rotating assets across industrial facilities, HVAC systems, water treatment plants, and data centers. Advantech's wired condition monitoring solution combines the WISE-2461 3-axis vibration sensor with Advantech WISE PHM software deployed on the highly compatible UNO-247 V2 edge computer, enabling continuous vibration monitoring, equipment health assessment, and AI-based fault diagnosis for supported pump and fan configurations.

Common Challenges in Rotating Machinery Monitoring

  • Periodic inspections provide only point-in-time measurements, leaving visibility gaps between inspection rounds.
  • Early-stage vibration changes can be difficult to distinguish from normal operating variations without continuous trending and frequency analysis.
  • Overall vibration values or single-direction measurements may provide limited diagnostic context, as different faults can appear across different directions and frequency components.
  • Sensors installed near rotating machinery must operate reliably under dust, moisture, temperature changes, and harsh industrial conditions.
  • Vibration data must be easily integrated with existing controllers, gateways, and monitoring systems.

Application Concept

Advantech's wired condition monitoring solution combines the WISE-2461 smart vibration sensor with the PHM software deployed on the UNO-247 V2 to support continuous monitoring, equipment health assessment, and AI-based fault diagnosis for supported pump and fan configurations.

  • WISE-2461 Smart Vibration Sensor: Captures high-resolution vibration data across three axes with a detection range of up to 6 kHz. Built-in vibration calculations, FFT analysis, and configurable frequency detection bands help monitor changing equipment conditions, while its compact IP68 design supports installation in harsh industrial environments.
  • UNO-247 V2 Edge Computer: Provides the industrial computing and connectivity platform for collecting vibration data from WISE-2461 sensors through RS-485 and Modbus RTU. Its fanless design enables reliable local processing close to rotating equipment.
  • PHM Software: Visualizes equipment health, historical trends, and alerts, while supporting vibration severity assessment based on ISO 10816 and providing AI-based fault diagnosis and maintenance recommendations for supported pump and fan configurations.

System Architecture Overview

WISE-2461 sensors are installed at critical measurement points on pumps, fans, or other rotating machinery. Vibration indicators, waveform data, and FFT results are transmitted through RS-485 and Modbus RTU to PHM software running on the recommended UNO-247 V2 edge computer. PHM software processes and visualizes equipment condition data, generates health alerts, and provides AI-based fault diagnosis for supported pump and fan configurations. Monitoring results can also be made available to higher-level management platforms or third-party systems through APIs.

Key Benefits

  • Continuous Equipment Visibility: Combines 3-axis vibration sensing and condition trending to identify equipment changes beyond periodic inspections.
  • Earlier and More Focused Anomaly Detection: High-resolution measurement, FFT analysis, and configurable detection bands help reveal abnormal patterns across different directions and frequency ranges.
  • Integrated Edge Monitoring: PHM software consolidates vibration data, equipment health status, historical trends, and alerts through a centralized interface.
  • AI-Assisted Maintenance Decisions: Built-in analytics models provide fault diagnosis and maintenance recommendations for supported pump and fan configurations.
  • Reliable and Flexible Deployment: The rugged IP68 sensor supports harsh industrial environments, while RS-485 and Modbus RTU enable integration with edge computers such as the UNO-247 V2, as well as PLCs and existing industrial systems.

Conclusion

Advantech's wired condition monitoring solution combines precise 3-axis vibration sensing, reliable edge computing, and integrated PHM analytics to provide continuous equipment visibility and AI-assisted diagnostics. By helping operators detect abnormal conditions earlier and make more informed maintenance decisions, the solution improves the reliability and availability of pumps, fans, and other rotating machinery.
