Advantech and Tono TV Advance Wildlife Monitoring with Edge AI for Safer Communities

7/21/2026

Taipei, Taiwan, July 2026 — As wildlife encounters continue to increase across rural regions in Japan, Advantech has partnered with Tono Television Broadcasting Corporation (Tono TV) to develop an AI-powered wildlife monitoring and alerting system designed to improve community safety through real-time detection and notification.

The proof-of-concept (PoC), currently deployed in Tono City, Iwate Prefecture, leverages Advantech’s edge AI technologies to automatically identify bears in monitored areas and deliver immediate alerts to local authorities, facility operators, and community stakeholders.

The project demonstrates how existing communication infrastructure can be combined with edge AI to create a scalable, proactive public safety solution.

Real-Time Detection and Alerting at the Edge

The solution is powered by Advantech’s edge AI architecture, enabling real-time video analytics directly at the deployment site rather than relying solely on cloud processing.

Key solution components include:

Advantech Technologies

● UBX-330M Edge AI PC

● Vision AI Solution for real-time animal detection and classification

● VisionSense Trainer for AI model development, training, and optimization

Integrated Notification Mechanisms

Upon detecting a bear, the system can automatically trigger:

● Mobile application notifications

● Email alerts

● On-site warning lights

● Audible warning systems

By combining AI inference, communication infrastructure, and automated notification mechanisms, the solution enables faster response times and helps mitigate potential risks to local communities.

Leveraging Existing Communication Infrastructure for Smarter Public Safety

A key aspect of the project is the integration of Tono TV’s existing communication network, allowing monitoring data and alert information to be distributed efficiently without requiring extensive new infrastructure investment.

This approach demonstrates how regional communication networks can be transformed into intelligent safety platforms that support real-time monitoring, event management, and rapid information sharing.

The current PoC supports multiple monitoring locations and is designed to scale as additional cameras and monitoring sites are added.

Expanding the Role of Edge AI in Community Safety

While the initial deployment focuses on wildlife monitoring and bear detection, the project highlights broader opportunities for edge AI in smart city and public safety applications.

The same architecture can be extended to support:

● Intrusion detection

● Disaster prevention and environmental monitoring

● Infrastructure surveillance

● Public facility protection

● Smart community safety management

By bringing intelligence closer to where data is generated, edge AI enables faster decision-making, reduced latency, and more effective responses to real-world events.

Enabling Safer and More Resilient Communities

The collaboration between Advantech and Tono TV showcases how edge AI, vision intelligence, and real-time communications can work together to address emerging community challenges.

As cities and local governments seek more proactive approaches to safety and risk management, Advantech continues to help organizations transform data into actionable intelligence at the edge, enabling smarter, safer, and more resilient communities.
