Advantech Successfully Completes O-RAN Global PlugFest 2021 Participation

December 22, 2021, Taipei, Taiwan - Advantech (TWSE: 2395.TW), a global leader in industrial IoT, participated in the 3rd Global PlugFest organized by the O-RAN ALLIANCE which aims to accelerate the maturity of products and solutions based on O-RAN specifications, and to verify and validate multi-vendor interoperability. Advantech SKY-8101 5G Edge Server based on Intel Xeon Scalable processor was demonstrated as part of an O-RAN architecture based end-to-end solution in collaboration with software-defined 4G and 5G mobile networks developer IS-Wireless.
The O-RAN ALLIANCE is a world-wide community of mobile network operators, vendors, and institutions that works to re-shape the Radio Access Network (RAN) industry. Advantech has contributed to the 3rd O-RAN Plug-Fest through its participation in the joint European O-RAN & TIP PlugFest. Advantech SKY-8000 Series of 5G Edge Servers enabled the demonstration of two scenarios in collaboration with IS-Wireless in the European OTIC in TIM Innovation Lab, Torino. The first scenario was to perform an end-to-end system testing of a 5G SA solution and the second the E2 interface testing of a nearRT RIC solution with real CU/DU solutions (protocol version: E2AP v01.01 and E2SM-NI v01.00). During the PlugFest, IS-Wireless successfully completed functional, performance and service testing using commercial User Equipment (UE).
The demonstrated IS-Wireless solution was fully virtualized with functions including DU, CU and RU and nearRT RIC deployed as separate containers on a single Advantech SKY-8101 server. Advantech SKY-8000 Series of 5G Edge Servers enrich operators’ white-box DU, CU and MEC hardware choices with an enhanced range of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers that have been optimized for Open RAN and the telco edge to meet high availability and carrier-grade network needs. The range scales from ultra-short-depth (290mm), extreme wide operating temperature (-40 to +65 degrees Celsius) configurations all the way up to dual socket designs that can be deployed as micro datacenters at the edge. They have been designed for high density PCIe card payload to integrate the required vRAN acceleration, I/O and time synchronization technologies while optimizing performance per watt. Advantech 5G Edge Servers integrate field-proven carrier-grade features that help minimize costly downtime and onsite interventions. These include advanced thermal and electrical design, dust filter and DC support, redundant and field-replaceable power supply units and fans, single fan failure support, redundant BIOS and FW images for fail-safe remote updates and secure remote platform management.
During the Plugfest, IS-Wireless provided an end-to-end solution: RU/CU/DU/RIC and Core with all containers deployed on one physical COTS server without any hardware acceleration. IS-Wireless offers a fully virtualized solution with particular functions deployed as separate containers. The company is part of the Open RAN Wave 2 revolution.
