USB Isolation – Strong Enough for Medical Applications

Challenge
Medical system designers who want to take advantage of USB’s plug-n-play convenience, hot swappability and robust peripheral support must often factor in isolation for safety concerns. Typically, at least two isolation methods are required in particular medical data systems. Some systems must also comply with the IEC60601 Standard: requiring isolation at all interfaces and peripherals and at patient points of contact.
Solution
Advantech model BB-UHR401 meets the 4kV isolation requirement for most medical systems. Some Advantech medical customers have certified this product in their installation projects. Its compact size inserts directly into the USB signal lines of existing networks without requiring additional components or software modifications.
